What is session length?

Session length is the amount of time a user spends in an app or on a website during a single visit, measured from open to close or to an inactivity timeout. It is usually reported as an average or median across all sessions in a period.

Why Session Length Matters

Session length tells a product team how much of the app users actually experience per visit. A short average session on a utility app can be a sign of efficiency, while a short session on a community or content app usually means users are not finding enough to hold their attention. Combined with session frequency, it gives a fuller picture of engagement than active-user counts alone: two apps with the same daily active users can have very different depths of use. For monetization teams, session length also sets the ceiling on how many opportunities exist per visit to show content, offers, or subscription prompts.

How to Calculate Session Length

A session begins on app open and ends on close or after a period of inactivity. Analytics tools typically use a 30-minute inactivity timeout on web and a shorter one, often 5 to 10 minutes, on mobile.

Average session length = total session time / number of sessions

MetricDefinitionWhy it matters
Average session lengthMean duration across all sessionsHeadline trend metric, but skewed by outliers
Median session lengthMiddle value when sessions are sortedBetter reflects the typical user
Sessions per user per dayHow often users return in a dayFrequency dimension that pairs with length
Time in app per user per dayLength x frequencyTotal daily attention, the metric that matters most

Worked example: an app records 120,000 sessions in a week with a total of 480,000 minutes of session time. Average session length is 480,000 / 120,000 = 4 minutes. If users average 2.5 sessions per day, daily time in app is 10 minutes per user. After launching group chat, sessions rise to 150,000 and total time to 750,000 minutes, so the average session is 5 minutes and daily time in app climbs to 15 minutes, a 50% increase in total attention.

Averages hide a lot. Segmenting session length by user cohort, feature used, or entry point shows which parts of the app hold attention and which lose it.

Session Length and social.plus

Session length is one of the metrics that moves most visibly when a brand adds social features through social.plus. A user who opens an app to check one thing and leaves in 90 seconds behaves differently when there is a feed to scroll, a group conversation to follow, or a live stream to watch. Chat, feeds, stories, live streaming, and groups all extend the reason to stay, and because they run inside the brand's own app, the added time accrues to the brand rather than to a third-party platform. social.plus reports engagement rates of 20 to 50% for apps that add social features, and longer, more frequent sessions are typically how that engagement shows up in analytics.

Key Takeaways

  • Session length is the time from app open to close or inactivity timeout, reported as an average or median.
  • Read it together with session frequency; time in app per user per day is the fuller engagement measure.
  • Medians and cohort segmentation reveal what averages hide, especially outliers and feature-level differences.
  • Social features such as feeds, chat, and live streaming extend sessions by giving users a reason to stay.
